NOTICE OF CO-OPTION FOR PARISH COUNCILLOR

 

Preesall Town Council currently has 2 vacancies for the position of Town Councillor, one each in North and South Wards.

Following the recently advertised casual vacancy for the statutory notice period for the North Ward, the Returning Officer for Wyre Council has confirmed that the regulation 10 request from electors has not been fulfilled and the Council can now fill the casual vacancy by co-option. The South Ward position remains unfilled from the Elections in 2023 and therefore, is also available to be filled via co-option.

Councillors contribute to the work of the Council by:

  • having a say about the things they care about
  • putting forward ideas for better services
  • responding to the needs and views of their constituents
  • seeking the best outcomes for local issues
  • getting involved in decision making by voting on matters considered by the Council

 

The Council meets on the second Monday evening of the month (excluding August) with meetings lasting around three hours.

To be able to stand as a Parish Councillor, an applicant must be:

  • at least 18 years old on the day of application
  • a British citizen or Commonwealth citizen, citizen of the Republic of Ireland or European Union citizen

An applicant must also be

  1. registered as a local government elector for the town; and/or who has
  2. during the whole of the twelve months preceding the appointment occupied as owner or tenant land or other premises in the town; and/or his/her
  3. principal or only place of work during those twelve months has been in the town; and/or has
  4. during those twelve months resided in the town or within 4.8 kilometres (3 miles) of it and is not disqualified from holding office by reason of any disqualification set out in Section 80 of the Local Government Act 1972.
